Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah recently spoke to journalists in London, where he addressed the recent arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry. Sanaullah stated that while he is not currently in favor of arresting PTI Chairman Imran Khan, he is considering it due to the statements Khan has made. The Interior Minister has denied allegations made by Khan that he was involved in a failed assassination attempt against him.
Regarding the sedition case against Fawad Chaudhry, Sanaullah stated that the Election Commission registered the first information report, not for the purpose of victimizing Chaudhry, but because of his comments against the Commission. The Interior Minister also noted that the court's decision to send Chaudhry on a 14-day judicial remand after rejecting the police's plea for an extension of physical remand was not controversial.
Several senior politicians, including those from the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, have spoken out against the sedition charge against Chaudhry and called for it to be dropped. Despite the criticism, the federal government has denied involvement in the arrest.
