President Dr Arif Alvi has expressed concern over the possibility of arresting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. The president stated that such an arrest would result in severe public reaction and should be avoided. He also mentioned that the “minus-one formula” (removing a political leader) has never been successful in Pakistan.
The president further discussed the political situation in the country, mentioning that there have been no negotiations between the government and PTI in the past month and a half. He added that Imran Khan is not opposed to talks but the responsibility for the lack of negotiations lies with the government.
President Alvi emphasized the need for political leaders to conduct dialogue and bridge the gaps between their parties. He believes that discussions should be held, as evident from the statements of PTI leaders including Fawad Chaudhry. The president also spoke about the potential vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and stated that he does not believe the premier will lose such a vote in the National Assembly.
On the topic of his own role, the president revealed that he has had no contact with the establishment and that the army has stated that it does not want to interfere in politics. He also mentioned that he held talks with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar but not the prime minister. President Alvi concluded by assuring the public that Pakistan will not default.
